Pastors Glendale United Methodist Church Nashville Pastoral Team

Rev. Peter van Eys, Senior Pastor

VANEYS-PETER-Staff73(2) copy

I was born in Nashville and raised in Green Hills and at my home church, Belmont UMC.  I entered the ministry in 1979 and have served churches across the Tennessee Conference and in the West Ohio Conference.  I hold two degrees from Vanderbilt University (B.A. and M.Div.) and one from Boston University School of Theology (D.Min.).

I am married to Patti, a Clinical Psychologist (Ph.D.), specializing in the care and advocacy of children and adolescents with maltreatment histories.  We have two young adult sons, David and Dane, who both live in Nashville. David is in the field of Transportation Logistics and Dane is a 3rd year student at Vanderbilt Divinity School.

I enjoy being with family, travel, hiking, and watching soccer.  I am looking forward to a World Cup final between the United States and the Netherlands…maybe 2018?  I consider it a privilege to be a pastor and desire that all might know God’s love and grace.

Brandon Baxter, Lead Preaching Pastor

I am a Nashville-area native and lifelong United Methodist. My home church is Calvary United Methodist Church in Green Hills. I graduated from Milllsaps College in 2001 with a degree in Music (Vocal Performance) and additional training in Education. Following graduation, I returned to the Nashville area where I trained teenagers involved in community education.

Sensing a call to full-time work in the local church, I began working at United Methodist churches, primarily in youth and music ministries. I have served churches in various portions of Tennessee including Calvary UMC, Germantown UMC outside of Memphis, and First United Methodist Church of Cookeville.

I returned to Nashville in 2013 and am currently enrolled in the Master of Divinity program at Vanderbilt Divinity School. I am entering my final year of school and am completing the requirements for commissioning as an Elder in the United Methodist Church.

I am married to Carol, a dentist in Nolensville and our daughters, Emerson and Miriam, are in elementary school. In my free time, I enjoy reading, playing piano, hiking, and spending time with my family.

Chelsey Hedglin, Vanderbilt Turner Scholar

HEDGLIN-CHELSEY-Staff48SI grew up in Oxford, MS and was raised in Oxford-University United Methodist Church, where my journey in exploring my call to ministry began. I graduated from United Methodist affiliated Millsaps College in Jackson, MS in 2013 with a B.A. in Religious Studies and minors in Peace & Justice Studies and Faith & Work. Upon graduation, I decided to stay at my alma mater for one more year and work as an AmeriCorps VISTA coordinating student volunteering and community engaged learning through the organization 1Campus 1Community.

In 2014, my husband Christopher and I moved to Nashville so I could attend Vanderbilt Divinity School. Currently, I am a 3rd Year M.Div. student and Turner Scholar at VDS. Last year, I was given the opportunity to serve as VDS’ Student Body President. I am a Certified Candidate for ministry in the Mississippi Conference of the United Methodist Church pursuing ordination as an Elder.

I am married to Christopher, who teaches Advanced Placement United States History at Hume-Fogg High School. My hobbies include playing soccer (with my colleagues at VDS on our intramural soccer team creatively called “The Para-cleats”), photography (though it’s difficult to capture the immeasurable beauty that God has gifted us on this earth, I like to try), art (crafting, painting, collaging, etc. I also like to incorporate art in worship), and travelling (I’ve been to 14 different countries and still don’t feel like I’ve begun to experience the wonder that this world has to offer). I am so excited to be on this journey in ministry with you!
